Where to Stay on Phnom Kulen

Two Ways to Spend the Night

Staying overnight on Phnom Kulen turns a long day trip into something much richer — cooler mornings on the plateau, dinner cooked by village women, and a night away from the noise of Siem Reap. There are two ways to do it, both run through the local communities:

  • Village homestay — sleep in a local family’s home in the village, the closest way to experience everyday life on the mountain.
  • Community camping — sleep in a tent at one of three CBTC-run sites, each set beside a stream or waterfall in the forest.

Both options include a mandatory security guard for your group and require an overnight stay authorization arranged in advance — see “Good to Know” below before you plan your dates.

Village Homestays

A small number of families in the village open their homes to visitors for the night. Rooms and set-ups are simple and similar from one home to the next — a mat or bed, a roof, and a genuinely warm welcome.

We currently work with 4 homestay families, all vetted and trained partners of the community-based tourism program — and this network keeps growing as more households join.

Pricing (per night)

What Price
Base rate, group of up to 4 people $20 / night
Each additional person beyond 4 +$5 / night
Mandatory security guard (1 per group) +$10 / night
Overnight stay authorization, per person +$5 / person

The overnight authorization is issued by the park and needs to be requested at least 5 days in advance — so a homestay isn’t something to lock in at the last minute. Booking through a CBTC means this paperwork is handled for you as part of arranging your stay.

Stay with one of our partner families

We work directly with 4 trusted homestay families in the village. Tell us your group size and dates, and we’ll match you with a family and take care of the security guard and overnight authorization.
Request at least 5 days ahead to allow time for the overnight authorization.

Community Camping

The CBTCs manage three eco-camping sites on the mountain – two around Anlong Thom and one in Popel – each tucked beside a stream or waterfall in the forest. All three are run the same simple way: a tent, bedding, a security guard, and dinner and breakfast cooked and served by women from the village.

Pricing (per person, per night)

Group size Price per person
1 person $40
2–3 people $25 / person
4–10 people $22 / person

Pricing already includes the tent, bedding, security guard, and dinner and breakfast — the same rate applies at all three campsites. Traveling with a small group naturally brings the per-person cost down, so it’s worth coordinating with fellow travelers if you’re going solo or as a pair.

O’Ta Chock
(Anlong Thom – main site)

Nestled near the Royal Palace trail, O’Ta Chock offers a peaceful overnight stay by a cool forest stream. Sleep in tents with pillows and blankets, enjoy the sound of flowing water and birds, and share a traditional dinner and breakfast prepared by village women.

  • Included: tent, bedding, security guard, dinner & breakfast
  • Facilities: toilet & shower
  • Bonus: forest, stream & wildlife sounds

Second Anlong Thom site (further along the river)

A peaceful eco-camping spot inside Popel’s protected forest. Sleep in tents near the waterfall. Enjoy dinner and breakfast prepared by the village women, delivered and served with a view. Swim in the stream, relax, and reconnect with nature.

  • Included: tent, bedding, security guard, dinner & breakfast
  • Facilities: basic toilet & kiosk
  • Bonus: forest bathing & waterfall soundscape

Anlong Run Waterfall (Popel)

A peaceful eco-camping spot inside Popel’s protected forest. Sleep in tents near the waterfall. Enjoy dinner and breakfast prepared by the village women, delivered and served with a view. Swim in the stream, relax, and reconnect with nature.

  • Included: tent, bedding, security guard, dinner & breakfast
  • Facilities: basic toilet & kiosk
  • Bonus: forest bathing & waterfall soundscape

Sleep by a waterfall, wake up in the forest

All three campsites are booked directly through the Anlong Thom or Popel CBTC, and your stay funds the community that hosts you. Please book at least 1 week ahead so the site and your evening meal can be prepared.

Good to Know Before You Book

A security guard is mandatory for every group, for both homestays and campsites, and is already factored into the price.
Homestays require an overnight stay authorization requested at least 5 days in advance: book early if a homestay is part of your plan.
Campsites should be booked at least 1 week ahead so your tent, bedding and evening meal can be arranged.
All meals – whether at a homestay or a campsite – are prepared by women from the community, using local ingredients.
Bring a headlamp or flashlight, a light layer for cooler mountain nights, and cash: there are no ATMs on the mountain.

Not sure whether to sleep in the village or under the trees?

Tell us your group size and travel dates, and we’ll help you choose between a homestay with one of our partner families or a night at one of the community campsites, and handle the booking, guard and authorization for you.
